Punjab has achieved a milestone in modernizing its licensing system by launching Pakistan’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based driving test car. The initiative, introduced under the directions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, marks a new era in the use of technology for public services. The innovative project, designed and manufactured by the Punjab Traffic Police, aims to ensure driving tests are automated, transparent, and free from human influence.
Advanced Features Enhance Testing Process
The AI-powered test car comes equipped with advanced cameras and sensors capable of assessing driving performance without manual interference. Inside the vehicle, a facial recognition camera and a biometric fingerprint scanner ensure authenticity. Additionally, four high-definition external cameras record driving maneuvers. This setup allows authorities to review real-time footage, ensuring the process remains impartial and candidates are evaluated solely on their driving skills.
Fully Automated Assessment System
When a candidate enters the vehicle, the system activates automatically to guide them. It provides test instructions through an interactive interface and displays a countdown timer. The car also checks for essential safety protocols, including fastening the seatbelt and engaging the handbrake. These pre-test safety verifications create a standardized procedure, minimizing errors and ensuring that candidates follow proper road safety measures before beginning the actual driving assessment.
Intelligent Failure Detection Mechanism
The system is designed to detect mistakes automatically during the test. For example, if a candidate engages the reverse gear more than once, the AI system instantly registers the error and declares a failure. Similarly, violations of traffic protocols or repeated unsafe maneuvers are logged in real-time. By removing manual oversight, the system eliminates bias or favoritism, ensuring every applicant is judged purely on performance, skill, and safety.
Instant Result Generation
One of the most groundbreaking features of the AI-based driving test car is its instant result system. As soon as the test concludes, the software updates the result without requiring human involvement. This not only saves time but also builds trust in the licensing process. Candidates no longer have to wait for manual evaluation, as automated assessment ensures fair, immediate, and transparent outcomes, boosting public confidence in traffic authorities.
Rollout Plan Across Punjab
The AI-driven vehicle will initially be deployed in Lahore, serving as the pilot project for the province. According to officials, the government plans to manufacture 200 such vehicles during the current fiscal year. These will be delivered to driving license centers across Punjab. The initiative reflects Punjab’s commitment to modernizing its public services, setting an example for other provinces, and aligning Pakistan with global standards in road safety and automation.
