Following the highly controversial ball‑tampering incident in the PSL 11 match between Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has initiated formal disciplinary proceedings against players involved in the incident. The controversies emerged late in the match when umpires deemed that the condition of the ball had been altered during a brief pre‑over discussion among Lahore Qalandars players. This decision proved pivotal in determining the match result.
Fakhar Zaman Charged with Ball Tampering
Lahore Qalandars opener Fakhar Zaman has been formally charged with a Level 3 offence under the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel for allegedly breaching the playing condition that prohibits altering the condition of the ball. The charge was filed after match officials reported the incident to the match referee, who then held a disciplinary hearing. Fakhar denied the charge during the hearing but faces further scrutiny.
According to PCB regulations, a Level 3 offence is serious and could carry a ban of one or two matches if Fakhar is found guilty in the ongoing hearing process scheduled over the next 48 hours. This is the first time Fakhar has faced such an allegation in the PSL.
Roles of Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf Under Review
While Fakhar Zaman is the only player formally charged so far, Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and fast bowler Haris Rauf were also involved in the brief interaction with the ball that triggered the umpire’s intervention. During the final over setup, cameras showed the three players handling the ball at the bowler’s run‑up, which led umpires to inspect it and subsequently award five penalty runs to the Karachi Kings.
PCB officials stated that the match referee is reviewing all evidence and video footage to determine whether Shaheen Afridi or Haris Rauf may also face any disciplinary action for their roles in the incident. As of now no formal charge has been announced against them, but the investigation remains active.
Hasan Ali Fined for Inappropriate Conduct
Separately, Karachi Kings pacer Hasan Ali was fined 10 percent of his match fee by the PCB after being found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the PCB Code of Conduct. This charge relates to the use of inappropriate language, actions, or gestures that could provoke an aggressive reaction from a dismissed batsman during a match. Hasan accepted the charges and agreed to the fine.
Level 1 breaches are considered minor in comparison to ball‑tampering allegations, but they are still taken seriously because they relate to player conduct and sportsmanship.
Reactions from Players and Officials
After the match, Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Afridi expressed uncertainty about the penalty decision and said his team would review the footage before commenting further. He maintained that the team did not intentionally alter the ball but acknowledged that they would assess the situation with match officials.
Fakhar Zaman has publicly denied any wrongdoing during his hearing, and his legal team is preparing to present evidence in his defense. A second hearing is scheduled soon to determine the final verdict and any further sanctions.
What This Means for PSL 11
The PCB’s actions underline its commitment to upholding fair play and integrity in the Pakistan Super League. Ball tampering is considered one of the more serious breaches of conduct in cricket, and how the PCB handles Fakhar Zaman’s case will set a precedent for future incidents.
As of now no final verdict has been announced, and fans are awaiting the match referee’s decision on Fakhar’s charge. Any ban or suspension could impact Lahore Qalandars’ campaign in PSL 11, particularly if key players are ruled out for disciplinary reasons.
