Pakistani and Chinese scientists have jointly developed PU786, a revolutionary hybrid rice seed capable of tripling yields from 1,600 kg to 5,600 kg per acre. This landmark achievement is the result of a decade-long collaboration between Punjab University (PU) and Wuhan University, marking a significant milestone in Pak-China agricultural research. The seed promises to enhance food security and boost Pakistan’s rice production.
First Honglian Variety in Pakistan
PU786 is the first Honglian hybrid rice variety developed in Pakistan. The research team included Prof Dr Muhammad Ashfaq, Dr Muhammad Ali Klasra (PU), and Prof Renshan Zhu, Dr Xianting Wu, and Mr Xu (Wuhan University). After rigorous testing, the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) approved the seed, recognizing its potential to transform the country’s rice farming sector.
Extensive Testing Across Provinces
The new hybrid rice was successfully tested in multiple cities across four provinces, proving its adaptability to different climates. Dr Ashfaq, Chairman of PU’s Plant Breeding Genetics Department, stated that PU786 is the result of 10 years of research. The seed’s high yield and resilience make it a game-changer for Pakistan’s agricultural productivity.

Resistance to Diseases and Extreme Conditions
One of PU786’s key strengths is its resistance to bacterial diseases, extreme heat, and pests. This makes it highly suitable for Pakistan’s challenging farming conditions. Experts believe the seed will significantly reduce crop losses while ensuring higher output per acre, benefiting farmers and strengthening national food security.
Boosting Rice Production and Economy
With rice being a major export crop, PU786’s high yield potential can enhance Pakistan’s global market share. The breakthrough also highlights the success of Pak-China agricultural collaboration, paving the way for future joint ventures in crop innovation. Scientists hope this advancement will inspire further research to address food challenges.
Conclusion: A Leap Towards Food Security
The development of PU786 represents a major scientific achievement for Pakistan and China. By tripling rice yields, this hybrid seed can play a crucial role in ensuring sustainable food production. As farmers adopt this technology, Pakistan’s agriculture sector is set to witness unprecedented growth, reinforcing the importance of international research partnerships.
