ColorOS 13 was released on August 18, this year. Oppo’s concentrated efforts to distribute it to existing phones resulted in the quickest rollout of any ColorOS version, but that’s not all.
More exciting news is included in this announcement: Oppo will begin extending software support for select flagships in 2023.
This plan will include premium models with four OS updates and five years of security patches. This is consistent with the pledge made by OnePlus earlier this year.
ColorOS 13 was released to 33 Oppo models worldwide, which is more than any previous version (50% more than ColorOS 12).
It has three times the number of users as ColorOS 12 did in the first four months after its release (October 11, 2012-February 11, for v12, and August 18 to December 18, for v13).
This makes v13 the most rapid and extensive update rollout in ColorOS history. Hopefully, this will encourage other manufacturers to do more than the bare minimum of 1-2 OS updates.
Oppo, however, is not the first to do so; Samsung provided extended software support for its flagships in 2021.
Google lags behind in this regard, with only three operating system updates per year and five years’ worth of security patches. At the very least, software updates appear to be on the rise.
