Ishaq Dar, a senior PML-N leader and former finance minister, will return to Pakistan on September 26 (Monday), which may be bad news for currency dealers who profit from dollar appreciation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his delegation will arrive in London today to meet with PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif.
Top party leaders will brief Nawaz Sharif in detail on the current political and economic situation in Pakistan. Ishaq Dar arrived in London four years ago in a special plane.
On Saturday, an accountability court (AC) in Islamabad issued a written order suspending Ishaq Dar’s permanent arrest warrants.
The AC ordered Dar to appear in court voluntarily by October 7, preventing police from arresting him upon his return to Pakistan.
In the order, the AC mentioned that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had not objected to the former finance minister’s petition for suspension of arrest his warrants. “Dar, in his application, had said that he could not come back to Pakistan because of his health issues and the cancellation of his passport,”.
The court further said that the purpose of issuing the arrest warrants was to ensure appearance of the defendant in the court. “But if he is willing to appear in the court voluntarily, it will be appropriate that he is given another opportunity,” read the order.
According to the AC, every citizen has the right to a fair trial.
Judge Muhammad Bashir’s accountability court yesterday (Friday, September 23, 2022) cleared the way for the return of senior PML-N leader and former finance minister Ishaq Dar by suspending his permanent arrest warrants until October 7.
The judge had ordered that Dar not be arrested upon his return to the country, giving the PML-N leader a chance to surrender.
The judge stated that once the former finance minister sets foot in the motherland, the court will look into cancelling the warrants. Dar had decided to return to Pakistan before the 7th of October.
It was also reported that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would fly from New York to London to discuss the assignment Dar could be given in the coalition government with former Prime Minister and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif.
