Asad Rehman Gilani, a grade 22 officer in the Pakistan Administrative Service who is now the secretary to the Board of Investment, was appointed as the new head of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) on Friday.
Gilani took on the extra job when Tariq Malik resigned abruptly on June 14.
Nadra resorted to Twitter to announce that the new chairman has commenced his duties on his first day in office. He also ordered the officials to do their jobs completely.
Former Chairman NADRA Resignation to PM
Malik encouraged the Prime Minister in his resignation letter to pick a professional and technical individual to succeed him rather than a sitting or retired bureaucracy. He also stated that Nadra could not be subjected to any additional political experiments.
Gilani’s nomination is also claimed to come amid calls on Malik to resign following reports that authority officials were engaged in the personal data breach.
However, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah denied that the former chairman’s departure had anything to do with the data leak situation. He said that all those engaged in the leak had already been prosecuted.
Some experts questioned the government’s handling of the incident and advocated for a qualified professional with a background in technology and management to run the organization instead of a sitting bureaucrat, claiming that national institution cannot afford such crises.
