According to a report, residents of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will no longer be able to share their Netflix passwords outside of their homes beginning July 20.
Netflix Passwords Sharing
The move is part of the streaming company’s larger effort to crack down on the widespread practice of password sharing. According to a Netflx customer service representative, the new regulation goes into effect on July 20.
According to the representative, only people who live in the same house can share passwords and access the same account under the new rules. NFLX will monitor the WiFi networks and IP addresses of devices logged into each account to enforce these rules.
The same policy has been implemented in India, with NFLX contacting customers who share their accounts outside of their households.
According to Mashable, similar restrictions had previously been imposed in over 100 countries, including major markets such as the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Mexico, and Brazil.
Netflx, on the other hand, has introduced a new feature that allows paying customers to add an additional member from outside their household to their account for an additional monthly fee.
According to source, this process has been simplified to allow members to transfer a profile to a new account while retaining their viewing history and personalized recommendations.
NFLX began cracking down on password sharing earlier this year in its largest market, the United States, in order to increase revenue.
