A new line of personal computers (PCs) designed specifically for running artificial intelligence (AI) program. Went on sale on Tuesday. As tech companies push for greater adoption of ChatGPT-style AI.
Last month, Microsoft unveiled its new AI-powered personal computers, or “AI PCs,”. Which will run the company’s software under the Copilot Plus brand.
The goal is to enable users to access AI capabilities on their devices. Rather than relying on the cloud. Which consumes more energy. Takes longer, and makes the AI experience clunky.
Neural Processing Unit
The PCs include a neural processing unit (NPU) chip, which aids in crisper photo editing, live transcription, translation, and “Recall”. A feature that allows the computer to keep track of everything happening on the device.
However, Microsoft ditched Recall at the last minute due to privacy concerns. Stating that it would only be available as a test feature.
ChatGPT’s Capabilities
Hardware manufacturers such as HP and ASUS’s devices. Are powered solely by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X Elite and Plus processors.
“We are redefining what a laptop actually does for the end user,” Qualcomm’s senior vice president Durga Malladi said at a tech conference in Toronto. “We believe this is the rebirth of the PC.”
Given the demand for ChatGPT’s capabilities, Microsoft predicted that more than 50 million AI PCs would be sold in the first year after its May launch.
