Meta’s Threads crosses 200 million active users
A day after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg discussed Threads nearing 200 million users during the company’s Q2 2024 earnings call, it was announced that the platform has indeed reached the milestone.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri confirmed on Threads that the user base has surpassed 200 million active users. The achievement comes just 13 months after the platform’s launch.
“I’m excited to share that we crossed the 200M milestone on @threads,” Mosseri wrote. “My hope is that Threads can inspire ideas that bring people together and that this amazing community continues to grow.”
The growth of Threads has been significant. Launched in July 2023, the text-focused social media platform reached 150 million users by April 2024 and 175 million users by its one-year anniversary in July. A recent growth spurt has led to the platform hitting 200 million users just a month later.
In comparison, Threads’ main competitor X (formerly Twitter) reported over 600 million monthly users in May, according to Elon Musk. The decline of Twitter under Musk’s unpredictable changes, which alienated many long-time users, was a driving force behind Meta’s decision to introduce Threads as an alternative for online discussion.
Last year, Zuckerberg suggested that Threads might have a “good chance” of reaching over a billion users. During the latest earnings call, he described the platform as being on a promising growth trajectory.
“We’re making steady progress towards building what looks like it’s going to be another major social app. And deeper engagement is being observed,” he said, adding: “I’m quite pleased with the trajectory here.”
