Kamala Harris started her run for president. She quickly gained enough support to win the Democratic nomination. She raised $81 million in one day. Republicans then attacked her because of her race and she is being called a DEI hire. Tennessee’s Tim Burchett said Joe Biden picked Harris only because she is Black. He called her a “DEI hire,” which means diversity, equity, and inclusion. He claimed she had a poor record.
This tactic is not new. Political experts say Republicans used similar strategies against Barack Obama in 2008. They questioned his birthplace. Keith Boykin, a Democratic strategist, noted the focus on race. He compared it to the “Southern Strategy” of the 1960s. This strategy used racial issues to get White voters.
Boykin explained how the talk about meritocracy started. Before, only White men were considered. When Black people, women, and other groups entered public life, people questioned their merit. Boykin said this is unfair and shows bias and that DEI hire should not happen.
Speaker Responds to Burchett’s Comments on Harris
Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson responded to Burchett’s comments. Johnson said the election should focus on policies, not personal attacks. He said Kamala Harris’s race and gender do not matter. He said the focus should be on who can help the country.
A lot of people got upset about what Burchett said. They thought his words were based on old ideas that aren’t fair to people of different races. Harris has had a big job history. She worked as a lawyer who prosecutes cases, a leader for San Francisco, and a top lawyer for California. She was also a senator and now she’s the vice president.
Boykin said something about unfairness. He noticed that Republicans didn’t doubt Donald Trump’s abilities, but they criticized Kamala Harris even though she’s been a senator and is now the vice president.
Bakari Sellers, a political commentator, said Burchett’s words turned diversity into an insult. He warned of a tough campaign ahead. He said Republicans might go to great lengths to harm Harris’s image. But he believed Harris could fight back.
Harris Stands Firm Amid ‘DEI Hire’ Criticism
Glynda Carr, president of Higher Heights for America, said such attacks could backfire. Many Black Americans support Harris. They raised $2.8 million for her campaign quickly. Carr said Harris’s supporters would organize against false narratives.
Boykin said Harris’s record speaks for itself. He called the “DEI hire” label a distraction and asked how attacking Kamala Harris helps solve real issues like jobs or inflation. Boykin said it is a divide-and-conquer tactic.
Harris seemed unfazed by the attacks. At her first rally, she talked about her experience as a prosecutor and politician. She promised to stand by her record against Donald Trump. The crowd cheered as she vowed to fight hard in the campaign.
