After a major power outage left large parts of the country without power on Thursday, Federal Minister for Energy Khurram Dastgir Khan assured Pakistanis that power would be restored completely by Isha prayers.
The electricity supply was suspended in several areas across Sindh, Balochistan, and Punjab on Thursday due to a fault in the country’s southern electricity transmission system.
Dastgir Khan told a press conference in Islamabad, “We will restore the system between Maghreb and isha.”
He informed the nation that an inquiry team had been formed to investigate the matter, and that its report would be submitted within five days.
According to the minister, the breakdown caused a shortfall of 8,000 megawatts, but at least 4,700 megawatts have been restored.
“Faisalabad and Multan regions have been completely restored,” he said, adding that SEPCO (Sukkur Electric Supply Company) supply has been partially restored.
Khan stated that it will take a few hours to restore the tripped plants and expressed hope that the plants that provide electricity to Karachi will also be restored.
“Electricity needs to be restored in Quetta and Karachi,” Khan said, adding that the tripping that caused the breakdown began in the port city and spread throughout the country.
The Federal Ministry of Energy had previously confirmed reports of power outages in Sindh and other parts of the country caused by “accidental faults” in the southern transmission system.
The ministry stated that it was thoroughly investigating the cause of the fault and that the power supply system would be restored soon.
Meanwhile, officials told the source on the condition of anonymity that the fault has caused a 6,000-megawatt shortfall in the national grid.
