The second-generation Echo Show-8 smart display from Amazon strikes the ideal balance between price, performance, and screen size. It also has an updated camera for improved video chat and home security.
SPECS FOR THE AMAZON ECHO SHOW 8 (2ND GEN)

- Resolution of the screen: 1,280 by 800 pixels
- Amazon Alexa voice control
- Bluetooth yes
- Physical connections none
Thanks to a nearly perfect balance of powerful audio performance for the size, a bright and colorful screen, and a tonne of practical Alexa voice control and smart home features for a reasonable price, the original Echo Show 8 has been one of our favorite smart displays since it launched two years ago.
Even though Amazon made only minor changes to the second-generation model, which costs the same $129.99 as the first, it is still good enough.
The only component of the second-generation Echo Show 8 that has been upgraded is the camera for video chat and home monitoring. It otherwise looks and sounds exactly like its predecessor.
Almost No change both Inside & Out
With dimensions of 5.4 by 7.9 by 3.9 inches (HWD) and a vaguely triangular side profile that tilts the 8-inch screen back slightly like an easel, the second-generation Echo Show 8 is physically identical to the first.
A camera is located in the top right corner of the screen, which has a half-inch frame that is completely flush with the LCD.

Pinhole cutouts for the far-field microphones, volume up/down, mic mute, and a mechanical switch for the camera’s privacy shutter are all located on the top edge.
The fabric covering the back of the Echo Show 8’s body matches the color of the front frame (it comes in black or white).
When it comes to audio and display performance, the hardware inside the second-generation Echo Show 8 is almost identical to that of the first.
It has the same dual 2.0-inch speaker drivers with a passive bass radiator and 8.0-inch touch screen with 1,280 by 800 pixel resolution.
Although the MediaTek MT8183 processor in this device is more powerful than the MT8163 in the previous model, in daily use, you probably won’t notice much of a difference in performance or responsiveness.
The additional power here didn’t seem to make much of a difference in the testing, and the original Echo Show 8 never felt especially slow to respond. Basically, you shouldn’t anticipate any differences between the new Echo Show 8 and the original Echo Show 8 if you already own one of those devices.
