Fox Studios released the first Deadpool movie in 2016. It felt fresh and funny. Wade Wilson, or Deadpool, was a rude mercenary. He destroyed enemies and the fourth wall with crazy energy. Deadpool kept talking to the camera. He mocked superhero movie clichés. Ryan Reynolds played Deadpool. He seemed perfect for the role. I liked the first movie. By Deadpool 2 in 2018, the jokes felt less funny. Now, there’s a third movie, Deadpool & Wolverine.
Disney bought Fox. Deadpool joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This new movie has a unique challenge. It makes fun of Marvel but still fits into the MCU. Deadpool says, “Marvel’s so stupid.” But it also tries to be part of the MCU.
Deadpool & Wolverine: Revisiting Old X-Men Moments
The movie pairs Deadpool with Wolverine. Wolverine has unbreakable bones and metal claws. Hugh Jackman plays Wolverine. Deadpool and Wolverine are both Canadian. Deadpool often joked about Wolverine before. Both characters are immortal. They can heal from wounds. Both want to fix past mistakes. They have good chemistry. Wolverine is serious. Deadpool talks a lot.
I can’t say much about the plot. The studio asked critics not to reveal it. The director, Shawn Levy, brings the two together through the multiverse. There are many versions of Deadpool and Wolverine.
Matthew Macfadyen plays a multiverse bureaucrat. Emma Corrin plays a villain. The script references other shows and movies. But it doesn’t feel new. Levy directed Reynolds in Free Guy and The Adam Project. He struggles with the violence in Deadpool movies. The action scenes feel more boring than exciting.
The movie tries to be sincere sometimes. Some cameos and plot points honor Fox’s old X-Men films. As an X-Men fan, I liked some of these touches. One casting choice made me smile. But it didn’t save the movie from feeling repetitive. Fans who love this kind of humor might not mind. Marvel isn’t as dumb as Deadpool says.
