The Google Home public preview now includes garage door controls, but there is no word on when they will be officially released. One Reddit user posted a screenshot of the new feature, which shows enormous pill-shaped open/close toggle switches that have appeared on the app without the user’s knowledge or consent.
A sneak peek at the Google Home app’s new option for controlling garage doors
It’s important to remember that this function is still in beta and has only shown in the preview version of the Google Home app. As preparation for Matter continues, Google has been testing a revamped version of its Home app since late October. Given that Google’s I/O event is coming up, we could soon get more information regarding this feature (and other Google Home app upgrades).

While garage door openers have been shown in the Google Home app for some time, until recently, they couldn’t be controlled from within the app. Instead, users were relegated to using Google Assistant, which requires a PIN for added protection, to operate garage doors using voice commands. If you want to try out the new in-app toggle, you’ll need to seek an invite to the new Google Home preview. However, if you’re too anxious to wait, there are also some aggravating third-party solutions that will force you to use the Google Home app for limited garage door functions.
