The number of marriages in China fell to its lowest level on record in 2022, following a trend that has persisted for the past decade. However, the marital total may have been impacted by strict Covid lockdowns.
According to figures posted on the Ministry of Civil Affairs’ website, just 6.83 million marriage registrations were finalised in 2017. This was down by roughly 800,000.
Authorities have to contend with a diminishing birth rate and a shrinking population, which explains why fewer couples are getting married. This trend follows pandemic restrictions that kept tens of millions of people confined in their homes or compounds for weeks last year.
In china the marriage rate is constantly declining
It is predicted that 2022 will signal the beginning of a protracted period of decrease in China’s citizen numbers, which will have significant effects on the country’s economy and the global economy.
The birth rate in China hit a historic low of 6.77 per 1,000 in 2018, down from 7.52 in 2021. As the country’s workforce dwindles and local governments struggle with debt, demographers predict China will become an increasingly aged society before it becomes prosperous.
China announced last month that it would launch pilot programmes in more than 20 cities to build a “new-era” marriage and childbearing culture in an effort to encourage marriage and boost the country’s dwindling birth rate. Paid marriage leave is being extended for some newlyweds in certain provinces.
