China’s special envoy to the Middle East, Zhai Jun, has called for urgent de-escalation in the conflict-ridden region. During talks with Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, he emphasized the importance of condemning attacks on civilians and non-military targets.
Conflict Threatens Global Energy and Trade
The ongoing war, triggered by US and Israeli strikes on Iran, has raised serious concerns about global energy security and trade routes. China, as a major oil importer, is particularly concerned about potential disruptions to its energy supplies from the region.
China Position on Iran
Beijing maintains close ties with Tehran and condemned the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. At the same time, China has criticized Iranian strikes on Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, highlighting its balanced approach in the conflict.
Concern for Regional Stability
Zhai Jun expressed that China is “deeply concerned” about the situation in the Middle East. He urged all parties to immediately cease military operations, prevent further escalation, and avoid harming civilians in the region.
Respect for Sovereignty
China stressed that the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of Gulf countries are inviolable. Attacks on innocent civilians or non-military targets must be condemned, reinforcing China’s position on international law and humanitarian principles.
Dialogue and Negotiation
In a separate meeting with Jasem Mohamed Al-Budaiwi, head of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Zhai Jun called for a return to the negotiating table as soon as possible, underlining China’s push for peaceful conflict resolution.
China Role in Peace Efforts
China pledged to play a constructive role in actively promoting peace and halting the fighting. Zhai Jun highlighted that Beijing is willing to facilitate dialogue among parties to stop violence and reduce regional tensions.
Statement by Chinese Foreign Minister
China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi echoed these concerns, stating that the conflict “should never have happened” and calling for an immediate end to fighting. Beijing continues to advocate diplomacy and negotiation as the only viable path to stability in the Gulf region.
