Finally, in order to build the domestic structure for 2023–24, which is now in a rut, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has chosen to involve the true stakeholders in the game.
It was reported that Zaka Ashraf, the chairman of the PCB Interim Management Committee (IMC), has invited all elected regional cricket association presidents to attend a meeting being held here on Wednesday to provide their views.
It should be noted that recently, Misbah-ul-Haq, Mohammad Hafeez, and Rashid Latif, all former captains of Pakistan, met in Lahore to discuss the creation of the nation’s domestic structure. Misbah-ul-Haq was subsequently named head of the Cricket Technical Committee (CTC).
Despite having divergent views on the amount of regional teams that should participate in the nation’s first-class cricket, they were unable to come to a resolution.
Later, the CTC nominated Hafeez and Inzamam-ul-Haq, another former skipper, as members. However, Inzamam withdrew his name from consideration to join the CTC after being named head selector on Monday.
In place of the 2019 constitution, the domestic structure has been changed to the PCB constitution from 2014. Eight elite regional teams and an equal number of departments were required to compete in domestic first-class cricket under the 2014 constitution.
However, a new formation is being planned to make Pakistan’s domestic season more fruitful and competitive since the old domestic system is being reinstated after a four-year suspension — from 2019 to 2023 when six regional teams were allowed to play first-class cricket.
