Recent immigration reforms in the United Kingdom are significantly changing the landscape for international students and immigrants.
With the Home Office releasing new data this week, the first effects of these policies are beginning to show, indicating a significant shift in visa applications and migration trends.
Impact on International Students
The UK government’s overhaul of immigration and international student enrollment policies aims to reduce the net migration rate.
A key change implemented in January 2024 is tighter regulations on student-dependent visas.
Resulting in an astonishing 80% decrease in applications compared to the same period in 2023, as students are no longer eligible to apply for spouse visas.
Student and dependent visas
In light of the updated visa policies, UK universities are imposing stricter restrictions on granting dependent visas.
International students are now limited in their ability to enrol family members or dependents in government-sponsored postgraduate research programmes.
Furthermore, measures preventing visa switching before course completion are intended to discourage institutions from exploiting immigration opportunities rather than providing quality education.
Health and Care Visas
The data also highlights the Health and Care visa, revealing a clear distinction between primary applicants and dependents.
While healthcare professionals such as doctors, nurses, and allied health workers can continue to bring dependents, recent government actions aim to reduce the disproportionate and unsustainable number of dependents in this category.
Crackdown on Worker Exploitation
In an effort to combat worker exploitation and abuse in the care sector, care providers in England are now required to register with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) if they sponsor migrants.
The government has expressed concern about cases in which care workers have been offered visas under false pretences, emphasising the need for regulatory measures to protect both migrants and British workers.
Salary Threshold and Upcoming Changes
Furthermore, the recent increase in the salary threshold for skilled worker visas from £26,200 to £38,700 is expected to affect future migration statistics.
Migration Advisory Committee
Additionally, the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has been tasked with reviewing the Graduate route for international students in order to prevent abuse and maintain the quality of UK higher education.
The Immigration Salary List, which will replace the Shortage Occupation List, aims to ensure that migrants are compensated equally with UK workers in shortage occupations.
While the preliminary results are encouraging, the government recognises the need for further evaluation. Subsequent data releases will help us understand the long-term implications of these reforms.
