On Wednesday, Norway, Ireland, and Spain became the first European countries to officially recognise a Palestinian state.
Israel strongly denounced this decision, while the Palestinian population responded with delight and excitement. In response, Israel took drastic measures, returning its ambassadors to Norway and Ireland.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre announced that his government will recognise a Palestinian state on May 28. “By recognising a Palestinian state, Norway supports the Arab peace plan,” he stated.
At this point, Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris emphasised the decision’s historic significance, citing its role in advancing a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The Irish prime minister stated hope that more nations would join Norway, Spain, and Ireland in recognising Palestine as a state “in the weeks ahead.”
On May 28, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that Spain would recognise Palestine as a state. Sánchez, who has led Spain’s Socialist Party since 2018, made the announcement in parliament on Wednesday.
