Apple users will be able to reap similar call benefits in the form of Live Voicemail while using the public beta of iOS 17, which is expected to be released to iPhones in the fall.

Public Beta of iOS 17

Live Voicemail, like Call Screening, transcribes phone calls and even allows you to join the call in the middle if necessary. Here’s how to enable and utilize the feature. During those times, I relied on Google’s Call Screening feature to pick up the phone and respond on my behalf.

The Google Assistant would transcribe the caller’s voice message in near real-time with the press of a button. There is always a slight delay, but the transcription was accurate enough for me to determine the level of urgency.

How to Use iOS 17’s Live Voicemail

1. Enabling Live Voicemail

To enable (or disable) Live Voicemail, navigate to Settings > Phone > Live Voicemail > and toggle the switch. It’s as simple as that.

If the option is not available, ensure that you are 1) using an iPhone model that supports iOS 17 and 2) running the most recent software version.

2. Making Use of Live Voicemail

With the feature enabled, you can now use Live Voicemail. To put it to the test, have a relative, friend, or someone nearby call your phone.

(Of course, you can also wait for that avoidable anonymous caller ID to phone in.) When they do, the incoming call screen will appear. Tap the Voicemail icon in the bottom right corner.

At that point, the iPhone will send an automated message to the caller informing them that you are using the transcription service and to begin speaking.

The iPhone will display a live transcription of what the caller is saying as he or she speaks. If you want to respond, you can send a message or pick up the phone.

It’s worth noting that, unlike Google’s Call Screening feature and Samsung’s Bixby Text Call, you can’t respond to Live Voicemail with an AI-voiced text message, so you’ll have to pick up the phone to respond in real time.

What iPhone models are compatible with Live Voicemail?

Live Voicemail will be supported on all iPhones that can be upgraded to iOS 17. Every model from this year’s iPhone 15 to the iPhone XR is on the list of compatible devices. Here is the complete list for your convenience.

How do I disable Live Voicemail?

You can disable the feature in the Phone settings. Toggle the switch off in Settings > Phone > Live Voicemail.
