An Apple AirTag is a useful device for keeping track of your most important items, such as keys, wallets, remotes, and even bicycles.

However, reports of AirTags being used to track people without their consent cast a cloud over their use and application.

Apple’s AirTag

This is why Apple made significant changes to what and how AirTags can be used, reiterating to the owners that these trackers are only for tracking their belongings and never for unwanted tracking of others. Apple also added the ability for users to detect when an AirTag is detected moving alongside them.

You will require an iPhone or an Android phone with the Tracker Detect app installed.

If you suspect that someone is tracking your movements with an AirTag, your iPhone may notify you before you do anything.

If you believe someone is tracking you without your permission and you are in danger, contact law enforcement to obtain more information on the Tag’s owner from Apple.

1. You may receive an iPhone alert

If you have an iPhone and an AirTag is tracking you, your phone may notify you that a “AirTag has been found moving with you.” This will occur if the following conditions are met:

2. After Tracking Notifications enabled

If you do not receive an alert about an unknown AirTag nearby, you may need to take the following steps to ensure that your tracking notifications are enabled:

3. Look into the Find My app

When tags are separated from their owners, they make a sound when moved to help others find them. If you hear an AirTag or another unidentified sound that you suspect it, open the Find My app on your Apple device. Simply ensure that the second step is completed before checking the app to see it.

4. Use it to make a sound

If you check the Find My app after being notified that an Tag was traveling with you, you can easily locate it by tapping Play Sound on the device.

You can only use the Play a Sound option if the Tag owner is not nearby and their Apple device is not within range. Only iPhones 11, 12, 13, and 14 with ultra-wideband technology have the precision finding feature.

5. Check the information on any Tags

Once you have your eyes on the AirTag, you can view the information on your iPhone or any other NFC-enabled smartphone. Simply place the top of your phone against the white side of the discovered AirTag and wait for it to recognize it.
