Volkswagen intends to resuscitate the long-running “Scout” model as an electric vehicle in the United States.
Volkswagen confirmed to CNBC that the suggestions would be voted on by its supervisory board on Wednesday. According to the Journal, VW obtained the Scout trademark through its acquisition of Navistar Worldwide Corp.
Electrical dreams
In July 2021, the Volkswagen Group stated that by 2030, 50% of its sales would be battery-electric vehicles.
By 2040, the company stated that nearly all of its new automobiles in major markets should be zero-emission.
VW’s electrification plans pit it against long-established automakers like GM and Ford, as well as relative newcomers like Tesla.
Just lately, Ford CEO Jim Farley mentioned his enterprise deliberate to “challenge Tesla and all comers to become the top EV maker in the world.”
In March 2021, Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess denied the idea that his company may join forces with Tesla, saying CNBC that the company was taking a more personal approach.
Diess was asked on “Squawk Box Europe” if he would rule out any future deal with Elon Musk’s electric vehicle producer, through which VW could build its vehicles, or if the Tesla and VW manufacturers would ever merge.
“No, we have not thought of [that], we’re going our personal approach,” he replied. “We need to get shut after which overtake.”
