In reaction to Russia’s new ‘fake news’ law, TikTok is stopping livestreaming and adding new content to its video service, the business announced on Sunday.
The measure, passed by Russia’s lower house of parliament on Friday, threatens jail time for anyone who publishes what the Kremlin considers incorrect information concerning the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
Those found guilty of publishing false information about Russia’s armed forces face a maximum sentence of 15 years in jail and a fine of 1.5 million rubles ($14,000 USD).
TikTok, along with several news companies, has chosen to halt operations in the country in order to protect staff and users who may use the app to “provide a source of relief and human connection during a time of war when people are facing immense tragedy and isolation,” tweeted the social media company.
Any interpretations that contradict the Kremlin’s definition of its actions in Ukraine as a “special military operation” and a “peacekeeping mission” could be harmful.
This ‘fake news’ regulation, together with Russia’s move to block Facebook, indicates the government’s efforts to suppress any narrative that contradicts the Kremlin’s official pronouncements or reveals the military’s role in causing a humanitarian disaster.
The law, in general, symbolizes Russia’s efforts to tighten the screws on any opponents. Anti-war protests have erupted across the country, with almost 4,000 people jailed in 53 towns on Sunday. There were 1,400 people in Moscow alone.
TikTokers have been filming the protests and other acts taking place on the ground, including how the economic sanctions are affecting ordinary Russians. Any suspensions cut off one more channel for those wanting to speak out against their government to the rest of the world.
