Security advertisements are a major source of revenue for tech firms, and their rising popularity is directly related to increased enforcement of privacy regulations. Everywhere you look—from billboards to websites to TV commercials—companies are advertising their newest privacy and security innovations.

Data rules have played a significant role in the recent uptick of privacy-focused advertising. Privacy rules have been around for decades, but the advent of regulations has made adherence to them a selling point. Companies’ growing awareness of data privacy aligns with the General Data Protection Regulation, the California Consumer Privacy Act, and other similar local legislation.

Beacon Digital Marketing’s CEO and founder, Whitney Parker Mitchell, claims that the implementation of laws leads to a spike of compliance-oriented staff. Because of this increase, protecting users’ personal information has become a priority. Consequently, businesses think long and hard on whether or not to include privacy and security compliance in their advertising strategy, with the preferences of their intended audience playing a significant role in this deliberation.

Examples of such initiatives include “privacy check-ups,” which use login pop-ups to encourage users to review and maybe modify their privacy settings. In the end, this change has been quite helpful for privacy and security. These marketing initiatives have been sparked by tighter oversight and better customer knowledge.

But it’s important to be wary before blindly accepting their assertions. Statements that rely on subjective assertions like “We’re the most secure” demand a good dose of scepticism, even though not every commercial can dive into the matter at length.
