You’re looking at a new Sonos entry-level soundbar that’s about to be released. The new soundbar, codenamed “Fury” and officially known as the model S36, will join the company’s portfolio below the $449 Beam and flagship $899 Arc.
Sonos looks to be unwilling to cede the lower-cost soundbar market to Vizio and other competitors, since I can reveal that the new model will cost roughly $249.
That’s a lot less than any Sonos soundbar we’ve seen so far. It’s scheduled to be released on June 7th, just a few weeks from now.
Genuine photographs of the new soundbar have been seen, and they were used by The Verge to build the 3D renders for this piece. It’s not an exact match, but its close enough to get the idea. Sonos’ affordable soundbar, like the Arc and Beam, will be available in both black and white.
The device is even smaller than the Sonos Beam, which is unsurprising considering the fact that it has fewer drivers:
- 550mm (width) x 69mm (depth) x 100mm (height) Sonos model S36 “Fury” (height)
- 651mm (width) x 68.6mm (depth) x 100mm Sonos Beam (gen 2) (height)
The new Sonos soundbar will lack built-in mics for voice assistant capability, as is to be expected at a lower price. It will also lack Dolby Atmos support.
Sonos will market this as a soundbar for watching TV and listening to music, leaving the smarts to its more expensive siblings. Internal specifications indicate that this product does not even have an HDMI port (only an optical cable comes in the box).
As a result, the new soundbar can only play Dolby Digital surround sound. If you have other compatible Sonos speakers, you can still make it a 5.1 system.
Sonos expects a significant number of customers to use the new soundbar as paired surrounds for the high-end Sonos Arc.
As a result, the company has developed a wall mount that will allow Fury “again”, that’s just the codename; I’m not sure what the final branding will to be put vertically as well as horizontally.
