Despite just starting a few weeks ago, a firm that provides an enterprise-focused internet browser has achieved a billion-dollar valuation.
Island emerged from stealth mode in early February, but thanks to a $115 million Sequence B financing round that valued the company at $1.3 billion, it has already earned unicorn status. Despite the fact that the product had been in development for two years prior to debut, Island remains one of the fastest businesses to reach the milestone.
Perception Companions, a venture capital firm, led the investment round. Perception Companions has previously invested in multibillion-dollar market value companies including Shopify, Qualtrics, and DocuSign. Sequoia Capital, Stripes, and Cyberstarts are among the buyers.
Island Browser
The main difference between Island’s browser and competitors such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge is a stronger focus on security. Despite their widespread use in the professional world today, according to Island, standard browsers are utterly unsuited for use in a business environment.
When the company came out of stealth, Island CEO Mike Fey said, “Probably the most widely deployed software within the workplace is the browser, but it’s a consumer-based design.”
“A client should have unrestricted freedom; they should be able to set up anything they want, go anywhere they want, and do whatever they want with their browser without incurring any penalties.” The company, on the other hand, must ensure that their customers’ data is safe, that their sensitive information is secured, and that they have a positive experience.”
Despite the fact that Island’s service is built on the same Chromium engine as many popular browsers and so has a familiar interface, it imposes a number of limitations on how end users interact with the internet.
For example, the Island browser allows security organizations to govern simple functions such as copy-and-paste, screen capture, and content material downloads. It also restricts the kind of extensions that may be installed and the websites that can be accessed.
Individually, the service gives IT director’s access to advanced tools to help secure SaaS applications and prevent data leakage, as well as complete visibility into all installations to help locate the source of events as quickly as possible.
“Island has revolutionized the way people think about business. The Island Enterprise Browser allows enterprises to achieve entirely new levels of security, productivity, and IT efficiency by essentially rewriting the work environment to be secure-by-design,” Fey continued.
“New money from Perception Companions, as well as increased funding from our existing financial partners, verifies our product-market fit, increases our pace, and emphasizes the enormous opportunity that lies ahead of us.”
