The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a 5.3-magnitude earthquake in eastern Turkey on Thursday.
In their announcement, the EMSC stated that the quake occurred at a depth of 10 km (6 miles).
Last year, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake was reported in Turkey’s southern province of Hatay, the most struck by a February 6 tremor which killed more than 41,000 dead in the country, the disaster response agency AFAD said.
The earthquake struck the town of Defne at 8:04 p.m. (1704 GMT) and was felt strongly by AFP teams in Antakya and Adana, 200 kilometres (300 miles) to the north.
The tremor was noticed by AFP teams in both Lebanon and Syria.
The disaster management service reported on Twitter that another 5.8-magnitude tremor struck three minutes later, with its epicentre near Hatay’s Samandag district.
An AFP journalist described scenes of terror in Antakya, adding that the additional shocks had created clouds of dust in the damaged city. The walls of badly damaged buildings toppled, and numerous people, who appeared to be injured, cried for help.
