This Watch-like sensor is capable of detecting COVID-19 and Flu

Smartwatches have made health and fitness tracking quite popular in recent years. Apple, Fitbit, and other companies’ wearables can effortlessly track your sleep, heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and other parameters.

A slew of new studies are now attempting to push the boundaries of wearable sensor technology. 

As a result, in conjunction with EnLiSense LLC, a team of bioengineers from the University of Texas has developed a wearable sensor that can detect illnesses through your sweat.

The study, which was published in Advanced Materials Technologies, demonstrates that the wearable sensor can identify two key biomarkers in sweat.

These are referred to as gamma-inducible protein (IP-10) and tumour necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand, respectively (TRAIL).

If the sensors identify high amounts of these two biomarkers, it suggests that your body is experiencing a cytokine storm, which occurs when the human body acquires a serious infection.

Dr. Shalini Prasad, the team’s leader, emphasized how detecting these signals through perspiration is groundbreaking.

“Our research is groundbreaking since it was previously unknown whether these chemicals were present in sweat. We demonstrated that our low-volume passive sweat technique can detect these indicators”.

With COVID-19 infections continuing a threat around the world, the new wearable sensor could be immensely valuable in detecting the virus early on.  It may also be able to detect the flu.
