When Microsoft acquired the Fallout New Vegas series through the Zenimax (Bethesda) merger, many people fantasized about giving prior acquisition Obsidian a second chance at the game. According to recent comments on a podcast, this desire is becoming a reality.
VentureBeat’s Jeff Grubb revealed on this week’s episode of GiantBomb’s GrubbSnax podcast that, according to his sources, Microsoft has begun very early negotiations mentioning developer Obsidian and a sequel to the 2010 RPG Fallout New Vegas.
Anything that comes out of these discussions would be years away, as Obsidian is already working on other projects, but it might reintroduce the Fallout franchise to some of its original founders.
The Bethesda-produced Fallout games are the most well-known in the series: Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76.
Some of the creators who worked on the first Fallout and Fallout 2 at Black Isle Studios went on to join Obsidian Entertainment, which released Fallout New Vegas, which is still a popular game in the franchise.
Because Obsidian and Bethesda are now part of Microsoft, a sequel is more likely than before.
Another Microsoft-owned RPG studio, inXile Entertainment, has spent the previous few years developing sequels to Wasteland, which the original Fallout was a spiritual successor to. Over the years, the current CEO of inXile has worked on both franchises.
The possibility of a Fallout 5 or New Vegas 2 is unquestionably a long way off. Both Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI keep Bethesda busy.
Obsidian has a lot on its plate with The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed in the works. That leaves inXile, which is working on an unannounced Unreal Engine 5 project.
If Grubb’s sources are right, Redmond is considering entrusting the Fallout franchise to studios other than Bethesda. And, given that The Outer Worlds was a tribute to that fantastic work, Obsidian would very certainly get another chance at New Vegas.
