X (formerly known as Twitter) has struggled with revenue and user counts since its rebranding and advertisers’ departure from the platform.

However, it appears that the newly introduced premium subscriptions are not helping, as the platform is considering even more absurd ways to generate revenue.

According to a change in text strings discovered by X Updated Radar, the social network may begin charging users for basic functions such as liking tweets, bookmarking, responding to tweets, and more.

New Policy

The change reflects a new policy that will charge users a small annual fee for these features. This policy was already implemented in countries such as the Philippines and New Zealand.

Small fee for X Users

Elon Musk, X’s owner, confirmed the change, saying that charging X users a small fee is the only way to deal with the platform’s bot surge. He claims that AI-powered bots and troll farms can easily bypass captcha tests.

However, such a move could easily backfire for Musk because it would drive away many existing users while also preventing new users from joining the platform. X also has a history of features backfiring under Elon Musk, which are quickly removed.

Musk has repeatedly criticised the proliferation of bots on the X platform. He has even flagged their presence, blaming it on attempts to undermine his promise to privatize the social media platform by 2022.
