Tech giant Xiaomi is aggressively expanding beyond its core smartphone business as it prepares to unveil a new electric SUV that aims to rival Tesla’s acclaimed Model Y.

Sources within Xiaomi disclose that the vehicle’s development has involved intensive comparison to the Model Y.

The SUV’s sophisticated technical specifications and stylish exterior design reportedly were honed by meticulously evaluating every attribute of Tesla’s popular mid-size electric crossover.

However, with Xiaomi’s vast resources and expertise in developing user-friendly connected devices, the new EV promises to match or even outperform the Model Y’s range, performance and smart features while maintaining a competitive price point.

Since Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, showed the company’s goals in this area back in 2021, the company has been organising to get into the electric vehicle market.

Xiaomi has sped up the development of its SUV providing, having previously focused on the SU7 sedan’s production.

Xiaomi’s SUV project will begin production in late 2025 or early 2026, perfectly timed to correspond with the end of the second stage of its cutting-edge assembly plant in Beijing.

300,000 EV

Xiaomi intends to produce 300,000 EV vehicles annually, and this plant will be essential to the company’s ability to manufacture these vehicles.

Industry sources say Xiaomi is aiming for the general public and expanding on the success of its first electric vehicle, the SU7 sedan, yet specifics about the coming SUV are still unknown.

According to reports, the company is making changes for any shortfalls from its first attempt to enter the EV market and making sure that its new SUV meets the demands of affordability, performance, and features.

In terms of affordability, Xiaomi is positioned to upend the Chinese EV market by providing its SUV at a lower cost than other brands.
