Ireland’s chances of earning automatic qualification to the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup were dashed when continuous rain forced the abandonment of the first one-day international between the teams in Chelmsford.
Ireland’s Super League match against Bangladesh in Chelmsford on Tuesday was rained off, giving South Africa the final slot in the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
Sri Lanka’s recent series loss to New Zealand and South Africa’s recent home series victories over the Netherlands have both made a difference in the race for automatic slots.
Teams currently in the lead in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League are India (hosts), New Zealand, England, Australia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and South Africa.
The late participation of South Africa in World Cup
South Africa’s final home series against the Netherlands gave them a good shot at clinching an automatic berth in this year’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The Proteas’ series win propelled them past the West Indies to claim the final playoff berth in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League.
The One-Day Internationals (ODIs) between Ireland and Bangladesh still determined whether or not they would qualify automatically. If Ireland had won the series 3-0 without getting any penalty points, they would have been tied with South Africa in the standings.
With Ireland’s first ODI against Bangladesh called off, the Proteas no longer have to worry about the net run rate, which would have determined the last slot.
Meanwhile, in June, Ireland will travel to Zimbabwe for the Qualifying Round.
