Nissan is a well-known Japanese automaker distinguished for producing reliable and innovative vehicles. Nissan has a long history in the automotive sector that dates back more than 80 years, and it has made a name for itself as a world leader in this field.
With a $500 million investment, the business is transforming its Mississippi manufacturing facility into the center of production for electric vehicles (EVs) in North America.
The plant has produced more than 5 million gasoline-powered vehicles since it opened in 2003, but it is currently being retooled to make EVs.
Nissan Produced EVs By The Middle of 2020
Nissan intends to start producing numerous battery-electric vehicles by the middle of the 2020s for both its Nissan and Infiniti brands.
Nissan North America’s head of production and engineering, David Johnson, described the company’s plans for the Canton site, saying, “Canton will be North America’s electrification hub for the next five to six years. That’s where we’re going to bring in the new platforms, the new technology.”
Utilizing lessons learned from the successful introduction of the Leaf hatchback more than 10 years ago, this strategic move is in line with Nissan’s significant experience in EV manufacturing.
The Canton-based EVs will be competitively designed and equipped with cutting-edge technology and upcoming connection features.
On one of its production lines, the factory will initially continue producing gas-powered Altima sedans alongside EVs.
According to the production plan provided by the supplier, two electric sedans from Canton will debut in 2026, followed by two electric crossovers in 2027 and 2028.
The plant will be expanded to handle the manufacturing of other components and the assembly of battery packs in order to facilitate the production of these new EV models.
Johnson said that although detailed plans for converting the Canton factory completely to all-electric output are not yet known, “All new product… that I’ve got visibility to right now in the Canton plant is EV.”
This suggests that the future of the plant will significantly tilt in favor of EVs. Although the market for electric vehicles may be becoming saturated, as businesses move towards more environmentally friendly options, it holds a lot of promise in the long run.
