Polio eradication

The World Health Organization has received US 9.9 million in new funding to support polio eradication efforts in Pakistan. This grant has been provided by Rotary International and was announced in January 2026. The funding is aimed at strengthening national efforts to eliminate polio from the country.

Purpose of the Grant

The grant will be used to support Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme activities. These include training vaccination teams improving vaccine delivery systems strengthening field monitoring and supporting operations in high risk areas. WHO will work closely with federal and provincial health authorities to ensure effective implementation.

Nationwide Vaccination Campaign Plan

Health officials have confirmed that a nationwide anti polio vaccination campaign is planned for early February 2026. During this campaign more than 45 million children under the age of five are expected to receive polio drops across Pakistan.

Pakistan and the Polio Situation

Pakistan is among the few countries where polio virus transmission has not yet been fully stopped. Health experts stress that regular vaccination campaigns and continued international support are essential to protect children and end the spread of the virus especially in remote and vulnerable communities.

Need for Public Cooperation

WHO and government authorities have appealed to parents and communities to cooperate fully with vaccination teams. Ensuring that every child is vaccinated is a critical step toward achieving a polio free Pakistan and protecting future generations.
