The World Health Organization (WHO) has given its official endorsement to the medical journalism degree offered by the University of Health Sciences (UHS). Pakistan is the first country in the area to officially endorse such a program.
The Eastern Mediterranean Association of Medical Editors (EMAME), a WHO affiliate, provided its stamp of approval on the diploma. In a letter to UHS, Farhad Handjani, president of EMAME in Iran, praised the institution’s work and stressed the importance of the initiative in improving the quality of medical journals throughout the world, not just in Pakistan.
UHS fits on the criteria of WHO
The diploma program at UHS is designed to improve editing and writing abilities in Pakistani medical research publications. In 2017, it began as a certificate course offered by medical writer Shaukat Ali Jawaid and titled Certificate in Medical Editing. The Medical Journalism for Editors certificate program started in the latter half of 2022. They have been successfully completed by over 150 health professionals.
The university syndicate has just authorized a Diploma in Medical Writing and Journalism for students who successfully finish both certificates. Prof. Dr. Nadia Naseem and her colleagues at the University of Health Sciences were the recipients of high praise from the institution’s vice chancellor, Prof. Ahsan Waheed Rathore.
