WhatsApp is adding video messages to the app soon, following in the footsteps of rival apps, according to WABetaInfo.

WhatsApp adding video messages

The feature was discovered in beta versions 2.23.8.19 for Android and 23.6.0.73 for iOS, indicating that it will be available on both platforms soon.

This feature, as the name implies, allows you to record a quick video for up to 60 seconds and send it as a message.

You can switch between audio and video messages in a chat, just like in Telegram, by tapping the microphone icon at the bottom right of your screen.

You can record by holding the button down, or you can switch between audio and video by tapping it. The same is true for WhatsApp on iOS.

Video messages will appear in your chat as a large circle, and you must tap on them to enlarge them and listen to the audio. To use this feature, both parties’ WhatsApp must be updated to the most recent version.

Because video messages are recorded in real time, you can be confident that they are genuine and not pre-recorded or forwarded messages.

3rd Material Design

In the same beta update, WhatsApp is also redesigning several parts of the app. The new design is called Material Design 3, and it will begin with an updated design for some settings and main menu buttons.

The design is similar to Google’s Material You UI, which is found on Android 12/13 phones as well as some of the company’s productivity apps.

WhatsApp’s video messages and Material Design 3 are still in the works, so it’s unclear when these updates will be widely available. However, because they are already in beta, it should not be long before everyone has access to it.
