Liz Lambert, a hospitality expert and founder of 3D construction startup Icon, and Danish design firm BIG have joined forces to create the world’s first 3D-printed hotel in Texas by 2023, with Marfa as the preferred location.
According to a statement on BIG’s website, the project includes the renowned Danish architect behind spectacular architectural marvels such as Copenhagen’s VM Houses and Mountain Dwellings housing complexes.
First 3D-printed hotel in Texas by 2023
The hotel will be erected on the same property as El Cosmico, a renowned camping spot in Marfa, and will employ cutting-edge technology.
The 21-acre site will be transformed into a huge 62-acre desert sanctuary, complete with a large infinity pool, cabanas, and guest homes. Icon’s economical home-sized 3D printer will create these captivating locales, virtually increasing the original site’s area.
The Vulcan printer, together with the Magma portable mixing device, is used in Icon’s construction process. The Magma produces Lavacrete, a building material designed and evaluated by Icon’s material science team to assure durability.
As a result, the new lodgings will be sturdy and dependable, guaranteeing that guests’ vacations are not disrupted by inferior accommodations or facilities. The photos of the project on BIG’s website convey a beautiful and friendly environment that immediately makes visitors feel at ease.
Although the BIG website indicates that the complex will be completed in 2023, there is no word on when El Cosmico will be ready. But one thing is certain: once done, it will be well worth a visit.
The world’s first 3D-printed hotel is slated to open just outside the desert city of Marfa, Texas, next year, with construction beginning the next year.
The hotel, which will be made up of numerous large-scale 3D-printed buildings, will have an infinity-style pool, a spa, and an artist’s studio.
It will be created by the pioneering 3D-printing business Icon, which has a contract with Nasa to build residences on the Moon and Mars. It will be inspired by the surrounding desert scenery and the universe.
El Cosmico, a pre-existing ‘nomadic’ hotel and campground site where visitors sleep in trailers, tepees, and safari tents, will be the site of the new hotel.
A strong printer and durable material
The Vulcan printer and the Magma portable mixing device form the foundation of Icon’s unique construction system. This final component creates the building material: Lavacrete, a substance produced by the tech company’s material science team and thoroughly tested to ensure its durability.
Meanwhile, Lambert is the founder of El Cosmico, a camping site near Marfa that has become a must-see for travellers from all over the world. The 3D-printed hotel will be erected on the same ground utilising revolutionary technologies in the new enterprise.
El Cosmico is now only 21 acres in size. However, the 3D-printed addition will soon nearly triple that size, transforming it into a spacious 62-acre desert oasis with all of the required ingredients for a genuinely delightful and relaxed summer vacation.
