A bill on the US Senate floor would abolish "predatory" data limitations for internet services

In order to squeeze as many consumers as possible, internet service companies frequently advertise faster speeds than they actually deliver.

Before signing up, a number of hidden expenses are not disclosed, and data limitations are enough to make customers want to rip out their hair in disgust.

Congress aims to discuss at least one of those issues, but it may just result in higher pricing for everyone as a whole.

The “Uncap America Act,” which was presented by the US Senate, aims to outlaw data limitations from broadband companies who appear predatory.

The Act would, though, permit restrictions for “reasonable network management or managing network congestion.”

The plan was submitted last week by Democratic Senators Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico and Cory Booker of New Jersey.

The lawmakers argue that internet service providers shouldn’t rip off households by charging excessive overage fees for high-speed Internet connectivity.

“As internet usage continues to be a necessity for work, education, and health care, no family should have to worry about extra fees and costs because of unnecessary limits on their data,” said Luján in a joint press release.

“Internet access is a basic necessity and has been increasingly important throughout the coronavirus pandemic,” added Senator Booker. “Unfortunately, many internet providers have imposed predatory data caps, making it difficult for many vulnerable families to access high-speed internet.”

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is left to define “predatory data caps” in accordance with the bill’s provisions.

The FCC will create rules and define precisely what counts as predatory practices. The color of the bill, however, draws attention to the charges for exceeding a data cap that is thought to be set only for financial gain.
