Twitter is getting more protected

Through the Tor onion service, Twitter is launching a privacy-focused version of its website. Alec Muffett, a software engineer, announced the move earlier this week, describing it as “possibly the most important and long-awaited tweet that I’ve ever composed.”

Tor is an acronym that stands for The Onion Router. It is a free and open-source software that allows for anonymous browsing.

Its services are private, are not typically indexed by search engines, and use self-certified domain names that are long and difficult to read.

The Tor network has been added to Twitter’s list of supported browsers. The social media website has always been accessible via the Tor browser, but this new development adds additional layers of security and improved software support.

It should also make it easier for Twitter to monitor malicious traffic that uses the Tor network without having to block innocent users.

Twitter’s onion service will be accessible through https://twitter3e4tixl4xyajtrzo62zg5vztmjuricljdp2c5kshju4avyoid.onion while using Tor browser or a similar tool.

Muffett reacted to this development by saying, “It’s a commitment from the platform to dealing with people who use Tor in an equitable fashion. Setting up an onion address is a practical step that demonstrates that the platform is providing explicitly for the needs of people who use Tor.”
