TikTok is introducing a fund for creators creating viral effects and filters for the first time — but based on the proposed payout structure, creators won’t be getting rich anytime soon.
TikTok’s Creator Rewards
TikTok’s Effect Creator Rewards program sets aside $6 million to compensate the creators of the platform’s most popular effects and filters based on the number of videos shared with their work. Effects used in 500,000 videos within 90 days of creation will earn the artist $700.
Within those 90 days, creators earn an extra $140 for every 100,000 videos that exceed the 500,000 threshold. That means you’d get $1,400 if your filter was used 1 million times in 90 days.
Only one video per person per day is permitted; for example, if a user posted a dozen clips with your filter in one day, it would count as one unique video toward the 500,000.
Creators of effects have long been frustrated by their inability to directly monetize their filters, which frequently serve as the foundation for trends or are used casually by millions of people every day.
Though the effects fund provides some compensation for creators who create filters for free, the bar to qualify for the baseline $700 is high, and the $6 million total pool of money is only a fraction of the $1 billion fund TikTok previously dedicated to popular content creators.
Another aspect of effects is that individual creators compete with TikTok-created and published filters.
It created the viral Bold Glamour filter, which has been used in 58.6 million videos, as well as other viral effects such as Teenage Look, Old Face, and AI Manga filters.
As of this writing, the company produces eight of the top ten trending filters displayed on my account.
Prior to the fund, people who created AR effects typically monetized their work through brand partnerships, commissions, or off-platform sales of their filters. Some effect designers also collaborate with TikTok to test and develop products and releases.
A new $6 million fund will compensate creators based on the number of videos in which their filters and effects are used.
