The United States has been attempting to ban TikTok in the country, claiming data security concerns. This attempt may become US legislation shortly, leaving TikTok with no choice but to be sold to an American corporation.
This is because a new US statute seeks to force ByteDance (TikTok’s owner) to divest the social networking app.
Now, that law has passed the US House of Representatives with strong bipartisan support, with a vote total of 352-65.
The bill now moves to the Senate for review. Notably, Senator Rand Paul has expressed opposition to the ban, providing a ray of hope for its eventual result.
However, if the bill passes, President Joe Biden has stated his desire to sign it into law, despite the Biden reelection campaign’s recent involvement with TikTok only a month ago.
Because of this measure, numerous US internet behemoths, including Microsoft, have expressed interest in acquiring TikTok’s global business, but ByteDance has rejected such a transaction.
Former Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, together with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has lately shown an interest in acquiring TikTok.
