BMW has decided to end production of the i3 electric vehicle, which was first introduced in 2013 and has been in production for nearly 9 years. According to the German automaker, 250,000 BMW i3s have been produced.
To commemorate the number, BMW has released a limited number of HomeRun Edition i3s as a farewell to the premium electric hatchback.
The BMW i3 HomeRun Edition is limited to only 10 units and is painted in one of two BMW Individual colour options. These are Frozen Dark Grey and Frozen Red II, both mattes finished.
The interior of the car features Vernasca Dark Truffle leather upholstery, a leather dash pad, a leather steering wheel with galvanised trim, a Carum Grey roof lining, and ambient and welcome lighting.
BMW introduced the i3 at a time when there were few electric vehicles on the market. The i3 was the first mass-produced electric vehicle, and it was sold in 74 countries worldwide.
It also advanced the automaker’s composite construction expertise with carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) shells and an aluminum chassis housing a battery pack and electric motor.
The thermoplastic skin was made from partially recycled materials by BMW. The German automaker claimed that recycled materials were used in the construction of 25% of the i3’s interior.
BMW used kenaf plant fibers to make its door panels, while eucalyptus wood was used to make parts of the dashboard. The i3, hailed as a source of inspiration, a driver of innovation, and a pioneer of locally emission-free driving pleasure, succeeded in attracting new customers to BMW’s premium mobility offerings. In the early years, more than 80% of all BMW i3 buyers were first-time BMW Group customers.
