The cancelled Xbox cloud console is now revealed

Microsoft planned to launch an Xbox cloud console named Keystone. This device looked like a small Xbox Series S. It was a small white box meant for Xbox Cloud Gaming. Microsoft later canceled the Keystone launch. A new patent shows what the Xbox cloud console could have been.

Windows Central found the patent. Keystone would have had an HDMI port, ethernet, and a power connector. The front had an Xbox button, a controller pairing button, and a USB-A port. The bottom had a “Hello from Seattle” plate, like the Xbox Series X.

The patent was filed in 2022. It was assigned to Chris Kujawski, a key designer at Microsoft. Kujawski led the design for the Xbox Series S and X consoles. Microsoft first said it was planning an Xbox streaming device in 2021. But it canceled Keystone because it couldn’t make it cheap enough.

Xbox chief Phil Spencer said they aimed for a $100 price. Spencer revealed Keystone on his office shelf in 2022. The official Xbox account on X called it an “old prototype.”

“It was too expensive with the hardware we used,” Spencer said in an interview with The Verge in late 2022. “We decided to focus on a smart TV streaming app instead.”

Microsoft then launched an Xbox TV app. This app works on 2022 and newer Samsung TVs and monitors. The Xbox TV app lets you play games from Xbox Cloud Gaming. It supports streaming games at 1080p at up to 60fps.
