A minister said on Friday that Tata Group will begin assembling Apple iPhones in India after Wistron approved the sale of its Indian manufacturing unit to the salt-to-software conglomerate.
According to Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Deputy Minister for Information Technology, a Tata company will begin manufacturing iPhones in India for both domestic and global markets.
According to a statement shared by the minister, the Wistron board of directors approved the sale of Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing India Private Limited to Tata Electronics Private Limited for an estimated $125 million.
Wistron did not respond immediately to requests for comment.
Apple has positioned India as its next major growth engine as it seeks to shift production away from China.
In 2017, the tech giant began iPhone assembly in the country with Wistron before expanding through contracts with companies such as Foxconn and Pegatron.
The Wistron plant in Karnataka state’s Narasapura was forced to close for three months in December 2020.
After workers destroyed property during protests over unpaid wages, causing millions of dollars in losses.
