Tarmac Linemarking, an Australian company, has developed a special type of highway line that glows in the dark. In May, they worked with Vic Roads and OmniGrip to conduct testing. These markings function by absorbing light during the day and then emitting it at night, making them visible.

The test was carried out on a one-kilometer stretch of Metong Road in Victoria’s southeast. Businesses have expressed a strong interest in this new technology, according to the company.
Other researchers and institutions working on similar technology include the City of Calgary and teams at Michoacan University of San Nicolas de Hidalgo and the University of Cairo.
This project’s main goal was to improve visibility on roads during low-light conditions, ensuring driver safety and promoting environmental sustainability.
Concerning the Coating
The “smarter path” line markings, like glow-in-the-dark stickers, rely on the natural science of photoluminescence.
In the dark, the coating emits light that it has absorbed and stored throughout the day, making it easier to see the pavement markings.
One kilometer (about 3,281 feet) of Metong Road in Victoria’s southeast was coated for testing earlier this year. Tarmac’s John Emanuelli told that since the testing, he has been inundated with requests from businesses and councils to have their paths illuminated.
