Sony’s mirrorless cameras have a significant advantage over their Canon and Nikon rivals, and its latest zoom lens is a reminder that it still has the glass advantage over those two behemoths.
Canon and Nikon have done an excellent job of expanding their lens lineups for their new RF and Z-mount cameras, which were released in 2018.
Even though many of the lenses are out of stock, they currently have 26 and 27 lenses for their mirrorless cameras, respectively. Both firms also allow you to modify lenses designed for older DSLR models.
However, Sony’s new FE 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master II, as well as the E-Mount series it belongs to, demonstrate that Canon and Nikon are still catching up.
This new mid-range zoom is a stylish complement to the company’s ‘G Master’ portfolio of high-end pro lenses. It’s also worth noting that it’s a second-generation follow-up to Sony’s initial lens, which debuted in 2016.
When it comes to DSLR lenses, Canon and Nikon are unrivalled, but neither company has yet developed perfected counterparts to its full-frame mirrorless lenses.
The FE 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master II is the company’s smallest and lightest f/2.8 G Master lens. With this announcement, the total number of E-mount lenses available has increased to 67.
Of course, it’s not all about the statistics, and some of those lenses really need to be replaced.
But the quality of Sony’s newest G Master lenses has blown us away, from the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II to the Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM, which “sets a new benchmark for speed and optical quality,” as we put it.
And this new mid-range zoom, while unquestionably pricey at $2,300 / £2,099 (about AU$3,700), is certain to follow in their footsteps.
