Sindh Government Announces Drone Surveillance in Karachi to Boost Security

Drone surveillance

Sindh Home Minister Zia‑ul‑Hassan Lanjar has directed authorities to establish a dedicated Drone Surveillance Unit to monitor potentially sensitive areas in Karachi and elsewhere in the province when needed. The use of drones is intended to enhance real‑time monitoring and support law enforcement operations in hard‑to‑reach or high‑risk locations.

Special Branch to Play Frontline Role in Counterterrorism

During a high‑level review meeting at the Central Police Office in Karachi, Lanjar emphasized the need to modernize and strengthen the Special Branch. He announced that the Special Branch will be given a frontline role in counterterrorism efforts, aligning its responsibilities with contemporary security challenges.

Improving Intelligence Reporting

The Home Minister instructed that Intelligence Reports (IRs), especially those pertaining to border areas and internal threats, be made more meaningful and actionable. He stressed the importance of using intelligence assessments to develop proactive strategies that can preempt potential security risks.

Comprehensive Security Review

The review meeting was attended by senior police and security officials, including Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh Javed Alam Odho. Officials briefed the Home Minister on the current law and order situation, identified threats, and shared details of preventive measures being implemented across the province.

Coordinated Strategy Against Militancy and Extremism

Lanjar directed authorities to formulate a coordinated strategy to curb activities of banned organizations, sectarian groups, and militant elements in Sindh. The focus is on disrupting the operational capabilities of such groups and stopping violent activities before they can occur.

Enhanced Security for Key and Religious Sites

The Home Minister also ordered extraordinary security arrangements for key installations and sensitive locations throughout Sindh. He placed special emphasis on ensuring foolproof security at major entry and exit points, as well as at mosques, madrasas, and imam‑bargahs in consultation with their respective administrations.

Active Field Presence for Law Enforcement

Lanjar stressed that police officers and security personnel should remain actively deployed in the field rather than confined to offices. He called for intensified intelligence‑based operations, snap checking, picketing, reconnaissance monitoring, and regular patrolling with strategically placed checkpoints to deter criminal and militant activity.

Security Audit of Important Installations

Lastly, the Home Minister instructed that a comprehensive security audit be conducted for all important installations across Sindh. He ordered that detailed reports be submitted to his office, ensuring that vulnerabilities are identified and corrective measures are implemented without delay.
