Government primary schools in Sindh have been upgraded to elementary schools, according to a decision made at a meeting chaired by the Sindh Education Minister.
This move follows a review of the Sindh Education Foundation’s performance. The meeting decided to elevate government primary schools to the level of elementary schools, with a dedicated strategy in the works.
The Education Minister has announced a phased approach to upgrading primary schools in order to reduce dropout rates.
Furthermore, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto has given the minister a special mission to reduce the number of students leaving school.
During the meeting, Education Minister Sardar Shah announced that the upcoming academic year would focus on the importance of science education. He stated that the Sindh Education Foundation currently serves 874,000 students across 2,566 schools.
Earlier this year, the Sindh High Court (SHC) gave the education department two months to reopen government schools that had been closed due to insufficient resources.
Following a detailed report from Justice Salahuddin of the SHC outlining the dire state of government schools in Sindh, the court ruled to reopen these schools.
The report, based on surveys conducted in 19 districts, identified 2,640 closed schools, including 438 nonfunctional government schools in the Sanghar district.
