Senator Shibli Faraz, Federal Minister for Science and Technology, inaugurated the Integrated Physical Oceanographic Laboratory (IPOL) in Karachi on Friday.
The minister was in Karachi to inaugurate a laboratory at the National Institute of Oceanography. Pakistan has a vast coastal line and it helps researchers to research on different kinds of marine lives.
In his remarks at the event, the minister stated that the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) will provide baseline data that will eventually help assess damage to the sea ecosystem.
He stated that policies have been put in place to reduce seawater intrusion, sea-level rise, and coastal erosion.
During a briefing on the National Institute of Oceanography, Director-General Dr Samina Kidwai stated that the NIO’s Integrated Physical Oceanography Lab will serve as a hub where all physical parameters and associated data will be received and analyzed using cutting-edge technology.
The minister praised the efforts of the National Institute of Oceanography scientists and the project team in the field of ocean science.
The minister also went on a tour of the institute’s laboratories. He met with the scientists and spoke with them about their research.
