The Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) has been ordered to pay all outstanding employee dues by the end of Ramadan on the 20th.
In addition, a Senate committee proposed on Friday that car owners be charged up to Rs. 5,000 for a Radio Pakistan subscription due to the national broadcaster’s financial difficulties.
A Senate Standing Committee on Information subcommittee received a thorough briefing on the PBC’s financial situation and expressed concern about the non-payment of pensions and salaries to personnel.
Senator Irfan Siddiqui, the convener of the subcommittee, has asked PBC management to set a deadline for releasing overdue pensions and wages to Radio Pakistan employees.
Dues of Radio Pakistan
Tahir Hassan, Director General (DG) of Radio Pakistan, informed the subcommittee that two months’ worth of overdue pensions and salaries would be paid before Eid.
The committee was informed of Radio Pakistan’s financial difficulties, which included a drop in revenue of approximately Rs. 2.2 billion.
Authorities also asked senators to help them obtain a one-time bailout payment of Rs. 1 billion to cover expenses in May and June.
Other options for financial recovery for the department include charging car owners up to Rs. 5,000 as radio subscriptions at the time of registration and submission of the token fee.
After receiving clearance from the Radio Pakistan Board, Senator Siddiqui directed personnel to develop a financial recovery plan and deliver it to the Senate standing committee.
